Over the last couple of weeks, I have mentioned the possibility of running Promoted Posts on Facebook to a few business owners. The common response: “I didn’t know there was such a thing.”
This finding has prompted me to do a brief rundown of ad options for businesses on Facebook.
The first option is a basic ad to get more Page Likes or to drive traffic to a URL. This ad includes a headline, text, and an image.
The second option is a Promoted Post, which entails paying to push a post that you make to an audience beyond those that already Like your Page.
An additional sub-option for each ad option is the Sponsored Story, which helps people discover your business through their friends.
Ads can (and should) target a particular audience. Parameters you can target by include location, age, gender, interests, connections, relationship status, languages, education, and workplace.
The budget for an ad campaign can be set per day or for the lifetime of the campaign. You can spend as little or as much as you want on a campaign. You also will set the start day/time and end day/time for the campaign, and you can stop the campaign at any time before the end day/time if you wish to.
Bidding can be set to either optimize to get more Likes of your Page, optimize for clicks, or optimize for impressions. We typically go with the click route, that way you only get charged when someone actually clicks your ad. The amount you pay per click or per impression can also be chosen by you.
Are Facebook ads worth it? That answer can be different for different cases. We have run several ads for businesses, and most have gone well. A recent Promoted Post we ran for a local business had a $50 budget and resulted in over 200 clicks and 40 new Page Likes – a real success in my opinion.
My advice: If you are thinking about running a Facebook ad, give it a try. Set a budget you are comfortable with, craft a quality ad that speaks to your targeted audience, and see how it goes.
